Alright my friends, here you will find instrcutions and support to help you write an excellent, typed second draft of your poetry analysis essay.
Here again, is the essay prompt for the assignment:
What is your reaction to Dylan Thomas' "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night." Please write about what you notice in the language, form, and effect of the poem. Use direct quotes with line numbers to support your opinion and interpretation of the poem.
Write thoroughly both of a description of the poem and how the language (figurative, word choice, poetic devices, etc.) works to enhance (add to) the meaning of the poem. Give lots of examples to support your claims.
In other words, prove to me you know how to closely analyze poetry through your essay. Please type a minimum of four paragraphs and at least a page and a half typed. This should be your own analysis; however, if you cannot help from researching to write your analysis, you must cite all sources, and include a Works Cited page at the end of your essay.
-Use Times New Roman 12 pt. font.
-Include a heading with your name, class (ex. 9A), date, and assignment title (Poetry Analysis Essay)
-Double space your lines.
-Use either indentation or block style paragraphs, not both together please.
See my example of "The Weary Blues" analysis to help construct your own essay.
Remember:
1. Analyze the language closely.
2. Fully explain direct quotes.
3. Use transition, cause and effect, and compare and contrast words (This website has a nice list: https://www.msu.edu/~jdowell/135/transw.html)
4. Do not be redundant--if you already made an interesting statement, don't repeat it.
5. Connect your close analysis of language to the greater themes of the poem.
Good luck! I look forward to reading your professionally prepared drafts on Tuesday : )
